Why Is My Battery Warning Light On?

Our vehicles use a variety of warning lights to communicate information about issues in important systems of your vehicle. You’ve probably encountered a few of these before, such as the check engine light or the tire pressure warning.

One of these warning lights that may appear is the battery warning light, which appears as an orange icon in the shape of a battery. Though this may sound like a sign that your battery itself has failed, it’s important to know that this light may illuminate as a result of any issues in the vehicle’s electrical and charging system, not just due to a dead battery.

Common Sources of a Battery Warning Light

Dead/Dying Battery

While this light doesn’t always denote a battery issue, this is still one of the most frequent reasons for this light. Automotive batteries slowly degrade over time, losing their ability to hold an adequate charge to start your vehicle.

Batteries generally only need to provide power for the initial startup of the vehicle, as the alternator takes over much of that responsibility when the engine gets running. However, a dead or weak battery can lead to issues starting the vehicle, or the inability to start it at all.

If you notice the battery warning light has appeared on your dash, the battery’s condition is one of the first things you should check.

Faulty Alternator

As we mentioned above, the alternator is responsible for providing the consistent charge the vehicle’s systems need to run. Run off of the engine’s power output through the accessory belt, the alternator converts this mechanical energy into electricity to be used in recharging the battery as well as powering the many electrically-dependent components of the vehicle.

Without a properly working alternator, the engine may not be able to generate the power needed for the vehicle and could result in issues ranging from dim lights and interior tech issues to engine stalling or inability to start the vehicle.

Alternators can experience issues for a number of reasons, from internal component or wiring failures to a faulty belt pulley. If you suspect your alternator is on the way out, it’s important to have your vehicle’s electrical system inspected by a trusted local repair shop to avoid further issues or potential damage.

Battery Terminal/Cable Issues

Although the battery often gets much of the attention, it’s also a good idea to ensure that your battery terminals and cables are free of damage and corrosion.

Battery terminal posts can slowly build up corrosion from leaking battery acid, collecting around the terminals where the cables connect, which can prevent proper connection between them. Similarly, the battery cables themselves can experience damage as a result of moisture and corrosion or other physical damage that could disrupt the connection.
